Antique Shikli Rug. Late 19th century.

190 cm x 124 cm

The Shikli rugs were woven towards the end of the nineteen century in northwest Azerbaijan in the region of the village of Shikli. Their designs follow the tradition that imposes a determined layout of motifs repeated in all the pieces, allowing us to appreciate the variations in each one of them: in the colors, in the chosen filler motifs, the way of representing them, and the inclusion of the unexpected. These variants result from each weaver’s individual creativity while navigating the frame of this idiosyncratic, time-honored and alluring design.

This rug is proportionally squarer than most of Shikli rugs. The result is that the corner pieces in the upper angles are more compressed, and the free space in the field is reduced. Remarkable features are: the elegant floral guard on the ivory background border, the beautiful contrast and chromatic richness of the ‘flames’ of the cypress trees’ borders, alternating greenish yellow, light blues and burgundy; and most extraordinary, the profusion of multicolored horned animals that have three, four, five, six or seven legs!
