Caucasian Shirvan Rug, early to mid-20th century

285 cm x 145 cm

An extraordinary attractive and decorative semi antique rug, bearing the Shirvan Urartu Gupba design, with a wonderfully rich palette: A deep midnight blue on the field, madder red, greens, , various shades of red, saffron yellow, a mid-blue, various earth tones and ivory.
On the field we find the three overlapping stepped medallions, and on both ends it is featured the Gupba Symbol: on a serrated red form, three protruding wings to each side, represent the Phoenix, Armenian symbol for the Sun-God, sacred bird and object of an ancient cult in the Urartu region of Armenia. The Border system is formed by an inner floral secondary guard, the magnificent geometrical main guard with bushes, and an outer border that is a really masterpiece of linear work with inner pointillism, this one framed by two minor borders formed by tiny squares alternated in ivory and blue. The field is filled with the tribal repertoire of rosettes, little medallions, an arrange of motifs that bear the horned design of “animal-bird heads”, and tribal talismans.
Wool pile knotted on wool foundation. Mint condition. Full pile. Complete
