Khamseh rug, early 19th century.

260 cm x 103 cm

Woven by women of the Arab tribe of the ‘Khamseh Confederation’. The ornamentation of the four ivory medallions is organized around an infinite plant, this symbolizing the eternal growth of existence of the ‘tree of life’ flanked by pair of confronting birds and by representations of the ancient and mythical ‘bird guardian of the rain’, with two heads and a flower growing on its back. Both minor borders with multicolored ‘barber pole design’ and main border with a characteristic design of rugs from the Arab tribe.
Low pile with foundation visible as shown on pic. Ends secured.
