Antique Caucasian Kazak rug, late 19 th century/early 20th century.

254 cm x 117 cm (100” x 46”)

A decorative tribal antique rug, woven in the Kazak or Karabagh region of the Caucasus, with a nice balanced palette. On the midnight-blue field, four medallions are placed, bearing the Sunburst Design. According to Harold Keshishian´s personal interpretation, these may represent a stretched animal skin. This type of rugs are often referred as “Lenkoran”, due to the fact that these medallions are often in- between the medallions secondary to the “beetle” designs that are in most rugs known as Lenkoran. Most of this type of rugs have a compressed or fractionalized upper medallion, as is the case of this exemplar. The border system is formed by the main beautiful one with motifs outlined in ivory color that achieves an effective contrast as frame of the field. The smaller inner guard is formed by small polychromatic diagonal lines. The outer guard, on madder red, contains characteristic rosettes. The field is populated by an array of rosettes, flowering blossoms and diverse tribal motifs.
Wool pile knotted on wool foundation. Some foundation visible (please see photos). Old small repairs. Few knot rows missing on both ends. Low pile. Both ends secured. Still fair condition for its age.
