Qashqai Tribal Rug, first quarter 20th century.

280 cm x 220 cm (111” x 86,5”)

A large and decorative tribal rug from the Fars Province, Southern Persia. Woven by women of the Qashqai tribal confederacy, probably in the first quarter of the 20 th century. The four medallions feature the “Qashqai Emblem”. The midnight blue field shows the classic array of stylized birds with different and creative renderings, bushes, rosettes and tribal motifs. The stepped zigzag lines that symbolize flowing water, enclose the medallions and also the frame all around the field, on the corners this frame expands into four spandrels, whose ivory field is populated by a frame of three lobular bushes. These ones and some characteristics of the border guard system, refer to motifs that are also characteristic of the Khamseh tribes, this makes also a Khamseh tribes attribution, also feasible. As we know there is interaction, marriage and designs copy from each other between the different tribes. The classic medallions rug design of the tribes of Fars, was widely published in specialized literature.
