Antique Shikli Rug. Late 19th century.

202 cm x 137 cm

The Shikli rugs were woven towards the end of the nineteen century in northwest Azerbaijan in the region of the village of Shikli. Their designs follow the tradition that imposes a determined layout of motifs repeated in all the pieces, allowing us to appreciate the variations in each one of them: in the colors, in the chosen filler motifs, the way of representing them, and the inclusion of the unexpected. Thhese variants result from each weaver’s individual creativity while navigating the frame of this idiosyncratic, time-honored and alluring design.
This piece presents the same strict design lay-out, a wide field framed in narrow borders. The most prominent element is the central medallion adorned with arrowheads placed vertically. It is surrounded by a system of six cypress trees and four motifs as corner spandrels. In this extraordinary piece, the deep red field, with a pronounced abrash, lacks the abundance of ornaments that is usual in this typology; the corners, colored with marvelous, brilliant green shades, are the ones with the most concise design to be found among the known exemplars. The medallion shows variations of characteristic abstract linear motifs, of mysterious origin and significance.
